Royal Mail has unveiled a stunning set of stamps featuring eight legendary creatures and figures from UK folklore. Available to purchase from today, these beautifully illustrated stamps capture the essence of the UK’s rich mythological history, including East Anglia’s infamous Black Shuck, a ghostly hound said to stalk the Norfolk coast, among other areas. Other mythical figures featured include Beowulf and Grendel, Blodeuwedd, the Loch Ness Monster, Cornish piskies, Fionn mac Cumhaill, a grindylow, and a selkie.
One of the most captivating legends of the set is that of Black Shuck, a spectral hound with blazing red eyes, whose presence foretells death and disaster. With a deep connection to Norfolk, the creature has long haunted the region’s folklore. Stories of Black Shuck have been passed down through generations, particularly in towns like Sheringham and Cromer, where sightings are most often reported. The creature has also been linked to the famous storm of Blythburgh Church in Suffolk in 1577, when, according to legend, it tore through the congregation during a thunderstorm, leaving scorch marks on the church doors that can still be seen today.
Arthur Conan Doyle was so inspired by the Black Shuck legend that it became one of the key influences for his famous novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. Doyle, who visited Norfolk while researching folklore, was fascinated by the eerie tales of this ghostly hound prowling the coastal paths of East Anglia, and it’s said that these stories helped shape the spine-chilling mystery at the heart of his novel.
In addition to Black Shuck, the collection celebrates other iconic figures and creatures from around the UK. The landscape of British folklore is as varied as it is rich, with each region contributing its own unique myths. From the daring exploits of Beowulf, who battles the monstrous Grendel, to the mischievous piskies of Cornwall, and the enigmatic Loch Ness Monster, these legends provide a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the UK.
The stamps were illustrated by acclaimed London-based artist Adam Simpson, whose work has been recognized by the British Design Awards and the Art Directors Club Young Guns awards. His striking designs capture the mystery, power, and enduring allure of these legendary creatures. As David Gold, Royal Mail’s Director of External Affairs and Policy, explained: “For some parts of the UK, local myths and legends are as much a part of their identity as the local landmarks and architecture. These beautifully illustrated stamps celebrate a fascinating aspect of British culture and custom.”
