A bit of traditional variety mixed with a dash of sparkle and a flourish of magic. Where? Right now at the end of Cromer Pier.
The bi-annual Cromer Pier Show is one of the highlights of not just the Norfolk calendar but any calendar, anywhere. Why? For one thing, it’s unique in its very existence. This award-winning show takes place in one of only five UK seaside piers with a full working, flourishing theatre and is the only end of pier show of its kind in the World. That alone should be reason enough to see a show in this unique venue at least once.
The Cromer Pier Christmas Show is a live version of what Saturday night tele used to be in the run up to Christmas, with a bit of what’s still on your screens now.
Strictly fan? From the glittery disco ball throwing sparkles around the entire auditorium, to the live dancers and singing, you’ll be in your element. Hayley Moss and Ben Killingback deliver stunning live vocals, while the Cromer Pier Ensemble lift, leap and spin their way through fabulously choreographed numbers that wouldn’t be out of place in a West End musical. Chloe Edwards-Wood provides the classiest saxophone playing you’re ever likely to see.
Let’s not forget Nigel of course. Nigel Hogg is the Musical Director, and sits to the left of the stage as one-man musical tour-de-force. He regularly toured with Ken Dodd before joining The Cromer Pier Show, where he’s clearly been tickled for the last 18 years.
Like a bit of comedy? Norfolk’s own Olly Day steers the show with panto-esque hilarity. The Cromer Pier website suggests that we ‘please note that traditional seaside innuendo shapes much of the comedy format.’ This statement makes me laugh in itself and is probably about right. Remember those cheeky seaside postcards of yore?
Now, if it’s MAGIC you’re after – and let’s face it, who doesn’t need a little more magic in their life – Amethyst are absolutely incredible. This Husband and Wife duo perform some truly mind-blowing illusions before your very eyes, sometimes with audience participation. I won’t spoil it for you by going into detail, but subsequent to seeing the show, we’ve had animated family conversations about some of the tricks and we’re still none the wiser.
Finally, if you need special effects and are concerned that a theatre on the end of a Grade II listed Pier might not be able to deliver, the 8 metre Deltapix LED wall adds an exciting new visual element alongside the gorgeous scenery and sets.
In all, the show is pure, traditional, festive variety entertainment. All ages will get something out of it – be it the wonder of glittering spectacle, the good feeling from live music, dance and comedy, or the nostalgic glow of Christmas.
We went as a family on opening night – which also happened to be my birthday – and came away feeling that Christmas had well and truly started.

There may be slight variations in the running time but expect the show to last for approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including a 20-30 minute interval.
Is the Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre accessible?
Yes, there are ramps to the Pier entrance and wheelchair access to the Pavilion Bar and Theatre.
There is a designated area for wheelchair users in the theatre: please book wheelchair spaces with the friendly box office team.
A disabled toilet is located in the Pavilion Bar foyer and the Tides Restaurant.
Guide dogs are welcome. Hearing loops are available, pre-booking with the box office is essential.
