‘Tis the season of the (Nor)Witch…
I’ll confess, Halloween is like a second Christmas to me. A time of year when my dark and twisty side can shine and orange is the new black. And so is black.
I love everything about October – and Autumn. Pumpkins, Pumpkin Spice Latte (yes, I’m that basic), the leaves and the colours of nature, cardigans, hoodies, boots, bonfire night.
It’ll come as no surprise then that we’ve launched a little limited edition Halloween collection with a Norfolk twist. After all, according to Cultura Obscura, “Norfolk is considered to be one of the most haunted regions in the UK, while Norwich is considered one of, if not the most haunted cities in the UK.”
Take a look at our snuggly hoodies and cheeky-yet-spooky T-shirts, and make sure you grab them while you can, as they’ll only be available on sale up to and including Halloween.
If you’re looking to celebrate Halloween in Norfolk, here are some ideas:
- Pick your own Pumpkin at Algy’s Farm. October 1st to October 31st 2022, 9.30-4.30pm Monday – Saturday and Sunday 10-4pm. No need to book.
Do please use the insides of any pumpkins you carve though. Waste is one of the most terrifying things about Halloween. We always make at least a Pumpkin Soup with ours, but there are loads of recipes you can make. Take a look here at Love Food Hate Waste for more ideas.
- Visit The Pumpkin House at Thursford. On 15th & 16th October (when Inside Out Bushcraft and Adventure will be running some AMAZING free workshops), and then 22nd – 30th October 2022 (10am-4pm). You can enjoy a wooded trail, pumpkin totem poles, the original Pumpkin House or the miniature pumpkin house before picking your own perfect pumpkin.
The Pumpkin House is decorated with over 1,000 pumpkins and handmade out of wood.
- If you’ve got small humans, The Real Halloween event from The Fairyland Trust is simply MAGICAL. We took our two for many years and made some wonderful memories. The event is returning to Bradmoor Woods, West Acre on 29th and 30th October 2022. Book your tickets here.
- Go on a Ghost Walk, and see the spooky side of Norwich or King’s Lynn.
- If you dare, head to Fairground Frights at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach, for five nights of fear from October 26th to 30th.
- Spot a ghost (well, maybe). Here are some National Trust locations in Norfolk that are said to be haunted.
- Celebrate #PumpkinSpicedLatteSeason. Treat yourself to a Spiced Pumpkin Latte from The Waffle House in Norwich. made from real ingredients, and never bought-in syrups, it’s our pink of the patch!
- Read ghost stories (ideally round a campfire). There are loads of books on local Norfolk ghosts, myths and legends, which tell tales of local spooky goings-on from Black Shuck to Grey Ladies and ghostly monks. Search online or ask in your local library.
- Watch some classic scary movies. My personal faves include The Lost Boys, The Shining and most Stephen King adaptations. For truly disturbing scares, you can’t beat The Ring, and the Paranormal Activity and Annabelle franchises. For a more family friendly vibe (older kids only!), The Sixth Sense is still a good watch and the BBC series Ghosts (available here on iPlayer), made by the Horrible Histories people, is wonderfully silly and hilarious. Series 4 is just out!
- Experience Halloween at Holkham Hall. On from Thursday 25th – Sunday 28th October, 10am – 5pm. Pumpkin carving, crafts, trails… and a Whodunit to be solved!
Let us know if you’ve got any other great seasonal suggestions we can add to the above list.
Have a Happy Halloween in Norfolk!
~ Steph
