Ditch the grind this January. The New Year in Norfolk has a way of slowing you down. Short days suit coastal walks, quiet lanes and time spent in familiar places rather than rushing on to the next thing. It’s a season for supporting local cafés and shops, and noticing the details that are easy to miss the rest of the year. Norfolk doesn’t demand much at this time of year, but it gives you space to reset and ease into what comes next.
Here’s our practical January checklist for Norfolk that focuses on the local, seasonal and unforced. Think of it as things that naturally slow you down rather than a to do list to race through: simple things worth doing.
✔️ Walk the coast out of season
Wrap up and head to places like Holkham, Wells or Happisburgh where winter skies, empty beaches and big views come into their own.
✔️ Enjoy the Broads without the crowds
Winter is ideal for quiet riverside walks, birdwatching and stopping at waterside pubs when things are calmer.
✔️ Spend time in a market town
Wander through towns such as Holt, Burnham Market or North Walsham when life feels more local and less polished. It’s a great excuse to spend your time, and money, with a local business.
✔️ Visit a pier or promenade
A brisk walk along Cromer or Great Yarmouth seafront followed by fish and chips indoors rather than on the beach.
✔️ Support local hotels, B&Bs, cafés and pubs
January is a good time to seek out places that stay open year round and rely on locals as much as visitors.
✔️ Go wildlife spotting
Winter birds, seals along the coast and quieter nature reserves make this a rewarding time to look rather than rush.
✔️ Take a long inland walk
Footpaths through farmland, woodland and villages feel especially peaceful once the festive period has passed.
✔️ Browse independent shops
Bookshops, galleries and delis are easier to enjoy without summer crowds and sometimes even have time for a ‘proper chat’!
✔️ Revisit a familiar place
One of our favourites. January is good for returning to somewhere you already know and seeing it without distractions.
✔️ Do less, on purpose
Fewer plans, earlier nights and time spent outside are part of what makes Norfolk wonderful at this time of year. And it’ll fill your proverbial cup, ready to take on the months to come.
