Looking for an active and fun outdoor activity that’s also a really good way to enjoy Norwich? Your search is over!

Introducing the ‘Timeline Tour of Norwich‘ game-guided trail. You play the game on your smartphone via an app called ‘Questo’, whenever you choose, at your own pace. If you fancy a good challenge you can try to beat the clock and complete it in a hour. We just managed it but nearly died in the process! At one point I almost passed out from dizziness and we had to abandon Andrew entirely towards the end.

Seriously though, we had a brilliant time playing this game that takes players on a whirlwind, time-travelling trip through 1000 years of Norwich history. Starting with the Saxons, players meet the Normans, the Tudors, the Georgians, and Victorians.

Created by Eastern Quest, it’s suitable for the whole family and groups or individuals. At each location you’ll need to solve a challenge before you can move onto the next one, earning ‘XP’ points for speed and accuracy. You are also offered the ability to pause the game at certain landmarks and enjoy them for longer or take a well-earned break, meaning you can really make a day of it, and combine the game with sight-seeing in the Fine City.

Starting at Tombland and ending at The Forum, the game takes you on a tale of dissent, independence, commercial success, and architectural beauty. You’ll visit some of the city’s best-loved landmarks, and discover a few places off the beaten track as well. Along the way you’ll learn plenty of fascinating facts about Norwich, its history and people.

In all the trail covers 12 challenges and 4 km in distance. For about £10 for one device (which was all we used), that’s a pretty good value experience.
