As the Winter Solstice (December 21st) marks the shortest day and longest night, it’s a time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the return of longer days.
Norfolk, with its beautiful landscapes and stunning coastline, offers some wonderful spots to mark this special day.
Holkham Beach – Watch the sun rise or set over the expansive sands of Holkham Beach, where the winter light creates a magical atmosphere. This is a great place for winter walking in Norfolk.
Sheringham Park – Enjoy a peaceful winter walk through this National Trust gem, where woodlands and coastal views come together for a reflective Solstice experience. Walk down to Weybourne Station (one of our favourite places). If they’re open, enjoy a cup of something hot and a cake or mince pie.
Norfolk Broads – The tranquil waters and wide skies of the Broads offer an ideal setting to connect with nature and welcome the coming of longer days.
Norwich Cathedral – For a more spiritual celebration, attend a Christmas service or simply marvel at the beauty and tranquility of this historic space. Finish with a stroll along the river.
Thornham Harbour – As the sun sets, Thornham Harbour’s salt marshes and wide skies create a stunning scene. Perfect for a peaceful, reflective Solstice evening. And conveniently close to The Lifeboat Inn, the perfect winter bolthole.
Blakeney Point – Enjoy dusk walks by the water’s edge and watch the light fall over Blakeney’s dramatic coastal landscape. The night sky here is perfect for a bit of stargazing too. We’re at peak seal season too so you’ll probably spot some of these fabulous creatures (be respectful, sensible and kind around them!) – why not wrap up warm and take a boat trip out from Morston Quay?
Wells-next-the-Sea – As the sun dips into the sea, Wells’ big open skies and beautiful beach offer breathtaking views at dusk. Follow up with a cozy evening stroll along the quay. Check out the crab and lobster pot Christmas trees before hunkering down in The Globe.
